“Both the title of this work and its images foster, with irritating intensity, an awareness of the yearning for a state of unity alongside the fear of being united, of only existing through desire and fear. The incongruousness of oneness and duality, but also the knowledge of oneness that may arise from duality, become visible in these portraits, where mother and daughter are shown as individuals, but also undeniably as an integral whole. Alikeness and differentness, proximity and distance, self-assertion and realisation through the other, hardness and softness, otherness and familiarity—perceivable amidst all dichotomy is the umbilical cord that once connected them.”
